When Asking for Help: DON’T GO IN BLIND

When you ask for help, do your research, learn your options, and, in general, prepare before you ask. Preparation is important because the process of understanding and documenting everything may also lead to answers before you ask for help.

When you ask others for help, make a genuine effort to understand the problem. Write everything down. Be clear about what problem you are trying to solve, what has happened in the past, and what your options are. Learn as much as you can, document it, and know the benefits and risks of solving or not solving the problem. When you are ready to ask for help, you’ll be able to make your request clear and specific.

If your issue involves a co-worker, vendor, or business partner, write everything down. Save every email, take notes after every meeting, and write down every problem as it comes up. Be sure the problem is well-defined and well-documented. If you think you have options, document those too.

Following this advice will help you better explain what you know, what you need, what you’re asking for, and what someone’s help will mean in the long run.
