Why Culture, Not Race, Divides Us

The death of Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony, two teens, on April 2 last year showed a growing cultural divide. The two young men “locked horns,” resulting in a fatal fight. Austin, a young, athletic teen, was slain after Anthony drew a knife, an act that defies social norms. Beyond a personal argument, the tragedy was a clash between two profoundly divergent cultural frames. The escalation of a physical argument into a homicide stems from differing perspectives on force, honor, and social conventions in the two Americas. One world embraces civilization, while the other embraces a primitive ethic characterized by a large ego and small virtue.
